IR-SEP – instrument rating course

The aim of the IR(A) modular flying training course is to train pilots to the level of proficiency necessary to operate aeroplanes under IFR and in IMC. The course consists of two modules, which may be taken separately or combined:

  • Basic Instrument Flight Module:
    This comprises 10 hours of instrument time under instruction, of which up to 5 hours can be instrument ground time in a BITD, FNPT I or II, or an FFS.
  • Procedural Instrument Flight Module:
    This comprises the remainder of the training syllabus for the IR(A), 40 hours single-engine or 45 hours multi- engine instrument time under instruction, and the theoretical knowledge course for the IR(A).

Requirements:

Applicants for an IR shall:

(a) hold:

(1) at least a PPL in the appropriate aircraft category, and:

(i) the privileges to fly at night ;

(ii) an ATPL in another category of aircraft; or

(2) a CPL, in the appropriate aircraft category;

 

(b) have completed at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as PIC in aeroplanes, helicopters or airships of which at least 10 or, in the case of airships, 20 hours shall be in the relevant aircraft category.

 

Ground School:

Having Frozen ATPL (Theory exam passed) credits the achievement of the knowledge level.

Or 200 hours (theory exam passed) IR theory.

Flight Training:

The necessary instrument flight training dual hours are carried out in aeroplanes and/or simulators, under the supervision of authorised instructors.

A single-engine IR(A) course shall comprise at least 50 hours instrument time under instruction of which up to 35 hours may be instrument ground time in an FNPT II.

A maximum of 10 hours of FNPT II or an FFS instrument ground time may be conducted in an FNPT I.

 

Exams:

At the School, using the school’s facilities or at the Official Centre designated by the Civil Aviation Authority.

 

Estimated duration of the course:

It usually takes 2 months.

Remarks:

To endorse the Instrument Rating (IR) it will be necessary to accredit the level of English language. Must have a radio phraseology in English course (Airspeak).
